After reviewing the playcharts for the 1st and 2nd half of the Miami Dolphins game vs. the New England Patriots, heres what we found:
- Ryan Tannehill was sacked 4 times. 3 of those times he began the play under-center.
- When there was a "H" back in the back field, the Dolphins ran the ball to the "H" backs side 78% of the time.
- The Dolphins ran the ball on 7 of their 8 third quarter first downs. The 1st first down of the fourth quarter they ran Play Action deep to Mike Wallace.
- The Dolphins did use a 1 RB 0 TE package in the whole first half. In the second half they used that package 6 times.
- On the Dolphins game winning drive in the fourth quarter, the Dolphins only used a TE twice. Both times they ran routes.
- The Dolphins scored on every drive longer than 7 plays. (h/t) @thebullpin
- The Dolphins only had 2 three and outs in the 2nd half. (h/t) @thebullpin
Analysis
The Dolphins still can't seem to keep Tannehill upright in a base formation.
Earlier last week Patriots coach Bill Belichick mentioned how impressed he was with the blocking of Dolphins TE/H Charles Clay, the Dolphins must like his blocking too.
It seems to me Dolphins offensive coordinator was trying to bait the Patriots defense in the third quarter.
Looks like at halftime the offense saw that they were more productive without a TE on the field. Charles Clay was on the field a lot, just mostly as a flanker or a flexed Y.
